This tranquil lock on the River Trent offers a glimpse into Newark's industrial past. The lock's calm waters reflect the surrounding countryside, while the old lock-keeper's cottage and nearby canal warehouses evoke a sense of nostalgia. Visitors can walk along the towpath, watching boats navigate the lock, and enjoy the picturesque views of the river and its banks.
Some basic parking near the bridge with the traffic lights. Lovely walks along the tow paths. Very evocative of some 18th or 19th Century idyll (that never really existed!). Interestingly there is the last turf-sided lock on the Wey at Walsham Gates. The priory is on private land although in my wayward youth I did hop over the fence and visit once! Got chased by a huge herd of cows so served me right. I guess they are stricter now....anyway, lovely photo spots of the river and the priory in the background. There is also a new fish weir at Walsham Gates (PS12m it cost, apparently!)..Easy walk up to Pyrford Lock and back.
Took about an hour to do Pyrford & the river way walk. Such a beautiful walk. We went around 6pm and pretty much no one was there. Nice Riverside walk
Beautiful when you can easily get there. A bit of a hassle at the moment due to major works on the A3/M25 junction. I was cycling from Byfleet through Pyrford
It's very nice olace for walking, sailing paddle boards and boats. Even you can picnic and enjoy surrounding.
One of the many locks along the Wey navigation. Many stunning views as you calmly walk the toe-path alongside the canal. Every time you do the river walk, in the differing seasons, there is always something new to see. At the moment the National Trust are excavating a bypass for fish around the weir. Marvellous and highly recommended.
Great walks along the tow paths. Nice and wide and well maintained. Popular with dog walkers and families alike.
Wheelchair-accessible entrance
