This 16th-century cottage is a rare surviving example of a Wealden hall house, featuring a timber-framed structure, steeply pitched roof, and overhanging upper floor. The interior showcases traditional furnishings and artifacts, giving visitors a glimpse into the lives of its former occupants, including a 19th-century wheelwright. The cottage is surrounded by a charming garden, which includes a variety of flowers, herbs, and trees, and offers scenic views of the surrounding countryside.
For a small house, it was steeped in social history. The volunteer guides were really knowledgeable and a credit to the National Trust.
Fascinating property. Worth knowing that when you book a time and it says between say 10 and 11 it means arrive at 10 for the start of the tour which takes an hour, not arrive sometime between 10 and 11
A little gem well worth a visit. Fascinating insight into how the house developed through the ages. Also great cofe nearby in the village shop.
Wonderfully preserved old cottage with a fascinating history. Shown around by very knowledgeable volunteer. Well worth a visit, but you have to book it.
You need to book a place on a tour around the cottage as only 6 visitors are allowed in at any time. But it's well worth it if you love learning about life in the mid 1800's. Our guides were very knowledgeable and happy to interact with us, answering questions, etc. The only slight downside is there's no parking close to the cottage. You need to park near the local shop. Not a problem if you're fit, but if you are disabled or cannot walk far for any health reason, you might find it a struggle. Otherwise, we thoroughly enjoyed the visit.
We arrived shortly before our appointed time and my wife popped over to the Hambledon village cafe and shop for a drink and pastry. I waited in the car under a very old Oak tree at the edge of the village cricket green. We drove from Portsmouth and found the tiny village of Hambledon, in Surrey, to be a previously unknown by us,to be a really beautiful gem just a short drive from Godalming. Itself a lovely place to visit. The two volunteer guides were a wonderful team and gave us a superb insight into the life and times of previous occupiers of this quaint and rather lovely cottage. Many thanks to them both for their knowledge and humour . The N.T. should be made aware of how good their guides are.
