Ancient woodland and chalk escarpment with fantastic views The Sharpenhoe group of properties comprises four adjacent countryside areas to the north of Luton. These are (from west to east) Sundon Hills, Moleskin and Markham Hills, Sharpenhoe Clappers and Smithcombe Hills. Sundon Hills has a lovely picnic area, which is located immediately adjacent to the car park; benches are provided or bring a blanket and sit on the grass. Reputedly haunted, Sharpenhoe Clappers is a classic chalk escarpment and part of the Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It is crowned with traces of an Iron Age hill-fort and an impressive beech wood. If you have time, seek out the old chalk quarry and savour the views along the ridge of hills.
We did a 7.5km circular route. Great family walk with fantastic views. Some steep terrain, got up close with lots of sheep.
Beautiful, scenic place but I really feel like there should be some mention somewhere about how steep some of the climbs are. We walked about 2.5 miles and encountered 2, very long, VERY steep and uneven sets of steps. Not sure if there are other walks that are better but I wouldn't go if you have any mobility or cardiac/respiratory conditions.
Vast area of woodland and walking trails set in the stunning Bedfordshire countryside. Plenty of different trails to walk or run and lots of rope swings in the trees for small people to enjoy. The area is remarkably clean too which is always nice to see, dog owners obviously clean up after their animals. Some of the trails do have steep paths so may not be suitable for all.
Great place for a stroll. Wide vision makes the magnificent natural landscape more delightful. But mind the following things: the car park is small; the chalk stone will draw new pants for you; "soft stones" inside the grasses. HaHa.
A stunning place to explore, there are lots of paths that take you to see lovely views. Definitely best time to visit is on a cold frosty morning! The Icknield Way runs through linking Sundon Hills and Streatley.
