This 15th-century medieval house is a rare example of a fortified mansion, with a striking exterior featuring a curtain wall, towers, and a gatehouse. The interior boasts a grand hall with a high ceiling, ornate chimneypieces, and a collection of antique furniture. The house is set amidst 30 acres of rolling parkland, featuring a lake, woodland walks, and a variety of wildlife.
We had the most amazing, long weekend staying at Shute Barton. Impeccable hospitality - everything was thought off to make your stay in this beautiful Manor an unforgettable one.
Please note this has ticketed entrance only, you must call National Trust or book online. A fantastic house, even in its current state, the house is a holiday let for the national trust so do not expect the grandeur of a lot of estat houses. However I loved it, I liked the story behind the house, the links with the family and how it became a national trust property. It has the largest fireplace in the UK, if you visit let me know if the bat is still hiding in the hearth.
I went on an excursion - it was exciting. seems like a good idea to rent for vacation and spend time there with company. Full video in my Insta @y.Skybyk
Imagine living in a castle... you don't have to! If you visit Shute Barton, you will be staying in what is left of a castle with over 400 years of history. The stay is luxurious, cozy, and mysterious. The property is well located, placing many attractions such as the Jurassic coast and the Beer quarry near by. The surrounding countryside is stunning, and you will find things to do both in rainy days and in the sun! The only downside is the neighbour, who threatened to shoot my brother's drone down as he was getting an areal view of the castle. While the stay was perfect for five stars, his aggressive, unkind, unlawful, and unjust treatment of us really placed a black mark in our experience. Even when we tried to kindly accept his complaint and offered not to fly again, we where loudly shouted down and threatened, after which he called the National Trust to complain. Avoid him at all costs!
Interesting story about the owners throughout the years. Not an awful lot so see in terms of room. Really depends on what you are going for. If it's history you'll probably like it.
Enormous, spacious property with plenty of character! Very comfortable beds and bathrooms aplenty. Internet access is poor but TV ok. Kitchen was very well stocked - by no means a given in National Trust holiday lets. Recreational equipment ok - croquet set incomplete and lawn would have benefited from a finer mow. Access to the rooftop probably shouldn't have been granted: the padlock to the relevant staircase door was off. But this did allow us extraordinary views of the surrounding countryside. Overall, a lovely place to stay.
