This 16th-century manor house features ornate stone carvings, grand chimneys, and a picturesque courtyard, showcasing the skill of medieval craftsmen. The house's interior boasts a stunning great hall with a large stone fireplace, wooden paneling, and ornate plaster ceilings. The surrounding gardens offer a tranquil atmosphere, with a variety of plants, a pond, and a walking trail that provides scenic views of the surrounding countryside.
Small but extremely interesting building in a quiet setting. The volunteers were very friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. Parking is tight, but they have made extra provision for visitors' cars but I guess it could be difficult on a busy day. There is no shop or cafe (but there is a loo) and there are places to picnic in the grounds - I'd recommend the fishing hut as it has comfy chairs and a nice view when the weather is good.
The grounds are difficult to spot , the only sign is small and partially hidden on wall. The newer manor looks great from outside but sadly it's now holiday let's so no access. The old manor behind it is a mishmash of building. Must commend National trust on the conservation however the inside is meagre and disappointing. Only open for couple of hours on Thursday.
Completely enchanting! The Manor House is very interesting and the church is stunning. The guides were very helpful, knowledgeable and friendly (as well as dog friendly). We hadn't planned to visit but stumbled across it. We will be back!
Quirky little place with access to beautiful riverside and genuinely charming medieval church.
Very small but quaint little National Trust property, we spent 1 1/2 hr but would have stayed longer , if we had brought a picnic we would have stayed in the garden area , it's a shame the holiday let isn't allowed visitors, but still a beautiful building to see , volunteers very welcoming, the church next door is stunning and the little summer house is gorgeous. Nice walk around the gardens and if you are a walker there are some lovely walks in the woods and riverbank . To make this visit viable, I would suggest combining with a day shopping in the lovely Ashbourne town or visiting Ilan Park or Kedleston Hall Except to be here about an hour minimum
What a fantastic little NT place to visit! We had no idea that somewhere so interesting was so local to us! Although it's quite small compared to other places, the incredible volunteers made it feel like we'd had a full day out with their wealth of knowledge that they so kindly and happily shared with us! We visited The Old Manor, walked through the garden and woods, and then into the fascinating church next door. An amazing place that I'd highly recommend for a morning or afternoon out (just bear in mind they only open 10:30 - 2:30 on Thursdays). It would be lovely to see this place open on a weekend day too so more people could visit.. and maybe a little drinks/cake bit outside so people could make more of a day of it.
