Dramatic views from the highest point on the Island The Ventnor Downs rise steeply above the Victorian seaside town of Ventnor. With the sparkling sea below and the holm oak trees which have colonised the south facing chalk slopes there is almost a Mediterranean flavour to the landscape. On the top of the downs you find a complete change of landscape with large open areas of grass and heather. It is such a rewarding area to walk in as there is great variety and some wonderful wildlife spectacles at different times of year and you can enjoy fantastic views from this high position. You can drive to the top of the downs where there are several car parks which lead onto areas of reasonably level footpaths.
Loved the beauty, hope the #HSE_responsibles" for the non Radar Station Compound, with the UN Haz 3Y (declared on the gate) are keeping all safe. The natural environment seems great, watch for steep falls, and, we were advised of Adders, so stout shoes. Visited May 2024
Such a beautiful place to walk. The views are stunning. One of our dog walking favourite places to go. The worst part is driving up there because it's very steep and narrow!
This foggy day story started at ZIGZAG road, yes, zigzag. After the cool, fresh touch given by the Mist god, everything became talkative. "Hi", a gentle sound came from a cute red house, "Morning", we replied. Then, we chatted for a while about the weather, and etc. The little red seemed a little bit sad when we was saying goodbye. But we have to go due to the noisy belly. The story ended by encountering the family meeting of cows after we left the hilltop of Shanklin Down. Oh, by the way, two magicians have cured a depressive door as we passing by, thanks to them.
As an islander I visit this location atleast once a month and walk the dog up from Wroxall via the numerous tracks, albeit some are steep and gritty with slippery rocks ect. Once at the top the vista's are stunningly beautiful. Free car parking [P].
We walked up the steep hill to the top but it is possible to park at there. There seemed to be ample spaces to park. Panoramic views over the Isle of Wight.
Nice view. Great Outdoors walk. A bit windy at time but we'll worth it
Wheelchair-accessible car park
