Last entry 4pm. See a beautifully-restored village mill in action and learn how oatmeal, a staple of the Scottish diet, was once made. A mill was probably built here by the monks of nearby Sweetheart Abbey, but parts of the present building probably date from the late 1700s.
Interesting place of local history. Unfortunately when we went, the actual waterwheel part of the mill was covered by scaffolding and a white cover, so we couldn't see it. However still an interesting walk around with information about how it relates to the local community. There is an introductory video to watch at the start of the tour and there was also a children's quiz on offer. Separate to the mill, and available to see without charge is the millpond that fed the waterwheel, that is just up the hill. At the time we visited, the water level was very low due to leaks.
Fabulous history of the mill. How it began and changed over the years was detailed in a guided tour as well as informative plaques. The mi is open from top to bottom and we had a chance to see all of the workings. A great experience.
A little gem, a mill from a bygone time, the water wheel has been restored. There is a ten minute video to watch when inside that explains the working of the mill and history, then the guide will take you around the mill and he was very knowledgeable, well worth a visit. There is also a small shop inside. This mill is not suitable for the disabled person, as there are very step stairs and some areas are a little small. There is plenty of parking in new abbey for the mill.
Went to the mill with family on a sunday pm. Lady who showed us round was very informative. Great wee place to visit very interesting and good value. Highly recommend
Very interesting place to visit.. we saw the newly restored water wheel...watched a video which was very informative. Had a guided tour of the mill which was very informative and easy to listen too.. would be nice to see the machinery working.. would visit again...
Staff(women) were so friendly to us. Had a private tour(assume only visitors). She knew so much of the history and was really passionate. She also recommended lots of places to visit all over the swc300 in our camper. Very grateful
