One of the largest volunteer managed aviation collections in the UK with more than 90 aircraft, helicopters and cockpits from across the history of aviation. Four under cover display areas; a large shop that specialises is aviation related plastic kits and books; an on-site cafe; and a regular programme of special events that are arranged on an annual basis. The museum is a registered charity and relies on its visitor footfall to keep developing. Our last admission time is one hour before the listed closing time.
My wife, Kath and I went as we were camping not too far away. More my interest but she was quite keen too. It far exceeded our expectations both in size and content! There are a large number and great variety of aircraft on display outside from helicopters and single seat fighter planes to huge aircraft. The size of the Vulcan and others such as the Shackleton is staggering! There was a Wessex helicopter open on display and inside was a former crew member who related one or two accounts of being in a Wessex during hostile missions and of it's qualities and abilities. Aside from the aircraft outside there are two huge hangers with a fantastic assortment of aircraft and associated items far too diverse to mention but including a very moving display relating to the Dambusters mission. There's a well stocked shop for those wishing to purchase from a large selection of models, informative literature and other souvenirs. I can also recommend a refreshment stop in the cafe serving a wide range of snacks and meals. With friendly staff and spotless facilities it's not to be missed. You'll need to set a few hours aside to fully appreciate this very well presented and run museum.
Very good. All the volunteers are very knowledgeable & talk you around some of the aircraft and helicopters. The in door hanger's have all the restored planes in side all done by the volunteers so taking many year of dedication to get restored. The cafeteria is nice good price. The gift shop got lots of souvenirs to buy.. nice day out for all..
Lots to see. Loved the story about the spy plane. It was really exciting to have a seat in a fighter jet cockpit. The quide was really knowledgeable and passionate, explaining about plane control and settings. Really enjoyed it!
Thoroughly enjoyed my visit here,I hadn't been for a few years so it was great to see the new additions to the collection, and the cafe was superb. My only small 'niggle' was that there were many aircraft with access ladders to allow a view into the cockpit, however nearly all the aircraft were roped off and not accessible. Otherwise a fantastic few hours spent here.
Easy to find & great selection of planes, plenty of indoor areas to visit too. Cafe smart & clean with good selection of drinks, snacks & specials. If you gift aid on admission you get discount coupon for cafe. Dogs allowed in all buildings- cafe is by discretion depending on how many dogs
Spent 3 hours walking round the grounds and both hangers, very friendly and polite staff, spoke to one member of staff about the Gazelle helicopter and his knowledge was great. It is also very dog friendly and also the cafe was great you can also take your dog into the cafe. All in all a great few hours spent at a very good museum.
