Newark Priory is a 12th-century Augustinian priory located in Newark-on-Trent, Nottinghamshire, England. The priory features stunning architecture, including a striking west front with a large rose window, a tall and slender tower, and a beautifully preserved chapter house. The building's exterior is constructed from local limestone and boasts intricate carvings, while the interior is adorned with ornate stone tombs and medieval wall paintings. Despite being damaged during the English Civil War, the priory has undergone extensive restoration and now serves as a popular tourist destination and venue for cultural events.
Beautiful place. Next to the marches and the canal. You can take a lovely walk across the countryside. Past Newark lock. There is parking by Newark bridge. You can't actually access the Priory though, as its on private land but you get a good view as you walk past. It's close to the village of Riley. Don't know about toilets though.
Newark Priory is another awesome ruins worth visiting not only for historical reasons, but because it is haunted place ( if , of course you are interested in such thing). The phantoms of monks have been reported strolling through the ruins and along the banks of the River Wey. Ruined Augustinian building, founded in 12th Century by Ruald de Calva and wife, Beatrice de Saudes for Augustian canons. Newark Priory was one of the monasteries that were dissolved during Dissolution of the Monasteries by King Henry VIII. Today it is listed as a Grade I Ancient Monument. Ruins located on private land, so not open for public, but can be viewed whilst walking along the River Wey between Pyrford and Ripley. You may be able to get photos from the tow path, as there are breaks in trees. Although , you have to have a very good zoom on your camera to be able to do good shots. If you want to get there, from A3 take the B2215 to Ripley and then left onto the B367 Newark Lane. The priory will be on the right after free car park on the left ( just before crossing the bridge). Also just before crossing bridge, on the left there is the Wey Navigation, owned by the National Trust, which you also can visit for walks.
Amazing priory, great views from tow path of River Wey, very remote location, unfortunately you cannot visit the priory as it's on private land. But never the less well worth a stroll along the tow path to get the stunning views of quite a substantial ruined priory.
Great place to visit for sunset, unfortunately it's on private property so you can't really get near it and the view from the road isn't great. Excellent place for drone shots however
Beautiful place, but ruins are on private grounds so we can see them only from distance.
Sadly you cannot come close to these magnificent ruins as they are located on private lands. But there is good view from the road, or along the towpath by the river.
