A 12th-century castle ruin situated in Northumberland, England, featuring a mix of medieval and Romanesque architectural styles, with a rectangular keep, curtain walls, and a surrounding moat, showcasing the region's rich history and offering stunning views of the surrounding countryside.
Lovely looking castle ruins but unfortunately they currently have quite a lot of unsafe areas which are blocked off via metal fencing. The perimeter walkways are nice enough and there are still a few information boards with info to look at but access to the main castle isn't possible. Shame as I'm sure it would be nice to see the interior sections. I will visit again in future and see if more areas are accessible next time.
Stunning, I've spent the last two days within the castle grounds. I am an amateur painter and Norham Castle is a great subject. Each window is different and ouzes old charm. It amazes me just how much of the castle is still standing. And the pink tinge to the stonework. You can park at the easterly car park and walk around the grounds. However, they're are preserving the main castle and several arches, there are fences to stop people walking into the main building, understandably. Lots of information points. You don't need to pay or have English heritage membership currently. June 2024
Make sure you go through the doorway to the dark chambers underneath and also look up through the tower when you're going up the spiral staircase! Also some of the little out-crops don't look like much but have lovely views across the river or over the village. There is a sign saying the carpark gate closes at 4pm. To be honest I was expecting a bit of a sparse ruin but there was much to explore and great interpretive signage with illustrations.
Dissapointing as you can not get near the castle. They are carrying out a long term project to make the site safe. It is free to enter but only view the caste from a distance.
If you like castles then worth a visit, peaceful, and not over-run with people. Free to enter.
We visited here on a soft damp morning. It felt positively otherworldly. Very well labelled the castle ruins are accessible and interesting. Many wildflowers thriving below the old castle
