Set in the former Thurso Town Hall and Carnegie Library, now repurposed. North Coast Visitor Centre is primarily a museum, housing centuries of Caithness history, while an art gallery, cafe, and theatre are further attractions also found within the building.
A incredibly nice visitor center, better described as a mini museum. If passing the area this is really worth the time for a visit. The two highlights for myself is a section devoted to historic stone pillar engravings and rune stones. The other related to a nuclear power generator that had now been decommissioned, where the original control console is placed in the museum. The visitor center is located close walking distance to a old church ruin from the 1200s, which is also worth visiting at the same time.
If in this neck of the woods then it's a simple must visit for me. This place gives you that all important context and back-story to the region - it helped me feel more connected and in tune to a deeper level with the place. I loved the Pictish Stones and reading about the Norn language, the Scandinavian history, the "flows" and the Cat people. If you enjoy nuclear power station history then this is also the place for you. Free (donationa emcouraged). There is a cafe and some parking right outside.
Very very good! I love it, best museum in the northern Scotland! It has everything, pictish history bits, nuclear history bits, a lot of amazing things to see and touch. Highly recommended.
Much more than meets the eye! There are many rooms, covering the ancient and recent history, culture and widlife of caithness, there's a theatre space playing a 20min video about the area, and a local art gallery, a cafe and a gift shop, also toilets and a break out space.
Excellent and informative museum. Staff friendly and helpful. Exhibition on former Dounreay fast breeder fascinating. And Room of Stones of ancient standing stones was eerily fascinating. Well worth a visit highly recommended. Please leave a donation or spend in the shop as all free. Plenty of advice and free maps of area too. Thanks Mikhail
