This museum showcases the maritime history of North Devon, with exhibits on shipbuilding, sailing, and the region's role in the Napoleonic Wars. The museum is housed in a 19th-century warehouse and features interactive displays, models of ships, and artifacts such as navigational instruments and sailors' uniforms. Visitors can explore the history of the local fishing industry, the role of the coast in wartime, and the stories of local sailors and shipowners. The museum also offers a research library and archive, which is open to the public by appointment.
Staff are very friendly and knowledgeable. Once they found out my grandfather was a seafaring man from there, found what ship he often spoke about. A great deal of things of interest on different floors in a lovely old building.
Very friendly knowledgeable staff. A great place to have a maritime museum as this was the last place for trading sailing ships in the country. Sailing ship from here sailed to so many destinations throughout the world and produced great sailors. I could go on but...why not visit this museum and stroll through the narrow streets of Appledore to get a full flavour of those days not that long gone. Well even I remember the last of the sailing Ketches and schoolers...
Interesting walkaround for only a fiver to get a feel for the local history - transatlantic emigration in general during the 19th century and I didn't realise the impact the US army presence pre D-day had on the north Devon area.
We visited this museum as we were looking for information on navy ships during WW2 in and around Devon. An interesting place to spend a couple of hours with many rooms and maritime exhibits from past years to enjoy. We spotted the exhibit re Westward Ho and I later bought the book elsewhere. Very knowledgeable and friendly staff. Just a small charge to enter which is well worth it.
Lovely museum lots to see, will definitely come back the next time we visit. Staff were really friendly and helpful with questions we had. Amazing experience and lots of information on local history around north Devon.
