Thirty minutes walk up the track from the car park will take you into the Harris hills and Golden Eagle territory. The Observatory offers a hide/shelter from which to spot wildlife. It's unmanned and open 24x7x365
Although I'm sure this is an excellent location to view the Eagles of Harris, I visited during low cloud weather conditions and thus no aerial wildlife was observable. I would certainly advise on visiting during a clear day as your time will be squandered otherwise. There is a 20 minute walk from the car park to the observatory (or 15 minutes if you walk with pace). The path is well defined, it follows the river, and leads you directly to the observatory. The observatory itself provides a broad field of view of the valley in front and keeps the rain out. Overall I can only give this a 4 star review, under better weather conditions I'm certain it would be a 5 star.
A tiny piece of heaven! I spent an hour there on my own and didn't see another human being in over 3 hours of walking! A brief glimpse of the male Golden Eagle, but too be honest the landscape and the building was more amazing
Great walk in up a beautiful Glen. Obviously no one saw any eagles but the scenery more than made up for it.
What a truly beautiful walk up Glean Mhiabhaig on a well established track to the observatory from the car park on the B887. Well worth continuing further on passing the foot of Sron Scourst to your right which towers up to over 1500 feet. Keep your eyes peeled here for a pair of Golden Eagles circling above. Wear suitable foot wear and clothing to remain safe as you are in the remote wilderness.
The walk up to the observatory is well made and a gentle climb, about 2.5 kilometers. The hide is a small wooden hut on the right of the track. On the day we visited we didn't see the eagles (we stayed about 30min) but it will always be a bit hit and miss.
Parked up at about 3pm and walked up to the observatory in about 40minutes. We saw one eagle and some deer on the hills. It's a beautiful spot with a really lovely (easy) walk up. Highly recommend, but definitely take your binoculars!
