Description
*Please check the Okehampton Castle website for the official opening hours. The remains of the largest castle in Devon, in a stunning setting on a wooded spur above the rushing River Okement. Begun soon after the Norman Conquest as a motte and bailey castle with a stone keep, it was converted into a sumptuous residence in the 14th century by Hugh Courtenay, Earl of Devon, much of whose work survives. After the last Courtenay owner fell foul of Henry VIII in 1539, the castle declined into a ruin.

A very interesting place to visit. Audio to hear which is worth having as you go around the remains of the castle. Impressive as to how much of the castle is there. Beautiful views and also a lovely walk around it into woods and a meadow with seating at the castle and picnic area. Nice lady serving at the booth for the entrance fee and souvenirs.

Surprisingly interesting place although difficult to find. Could do with some more directions please. Great view from the top and how some of the castle remains standing is amazing. Steep drops though with no barriers so be careful with children!

I love castles, and this is a nice ruin of an old nobles hunting Lodge made to castle scale. Very sweet little historic site, quite steep towards the top, but lovely visit. Toilets available too, a big plus

Nice castle. Enough to explore for a couple of hours. Small kiosk where you enter which sells a limited amount of items. Toilets are on site. Lots of stairs and uneven ground to access the castle so this site is not good for those with limited mobility. There is a car park available but it's small and seems to be used by lots of people not visiting the castle. The town centre is a short walk away.

Lovely castle tucked just off from Okehampton. Free parking, small toilet and snacks on site. Quite steep in areas but certainly worth the effort.
