*Please check the Old Wardour website for the official opening hours. Set in the peaceful Wiltshire countryside beside a lake, Old Wardour Castle was once one of the most daring and innovative homes in Britain. It was built in the 14th century as a lightly fortified luxury residence for comfortable living and lavish entertainment. Today the castle ruin provides a relaxed, romantic day out for couples, families, and budding historians alike.
Decided to visit for an afternoon. Had a lovely afternoon wandering around the ruins. The weather made it a lovely experience. We made use of the narrated guide. The staff were welcoming and helpful. You do need relatively good mobility to get around as there are steps to get the most from your visit.
Superb castle if you are into old castles and ruins. Not a ton of people were there when we visited so that made the experience even better. Lovely staff who saved us money by making us members of the English Heritage and crediting our Stonehenge tickets.
We loved visiting this place so much that we came back later in the week with the rest of our family! Plenty to explore and the grounds are beautiful as well. Perfect place for a picnic!
Fantastic place. Not very crowded and free parking. Very nice place to explore. There are some very narrow roads you have to drive on to get here though.
A gem of a place after walking around made me want to wear a top hat. Not a castle in the traditional sense but a house built to look like a castle. Inside, there are lots of rooms over many floors to explore, and you can climb to the top to get a view of the new castle across the lake. The castle was accidentally blown up and then turned into a ruin feature in a garden. There is also a grotto and a banquet house to look at. There are plenty of benches to admire the view. Shop and toilets and information boards dotted round, or you can get a guidebook or audio tour
Lovely location! Cool castle, and the surrounding area. Some families were having picnics which is a nice idea, we had ours on the grass outside the grounds but still nice! Small back roads to access it but we have a small motorhome and just about managed ok.
