A 16th-century fortified house situated on the eastern shore of Lough Foyle, Olderfleet Castle is a rectangular tower house with four storeys, featuring a distinctive T-shaped plan. The castle's walls are constructed from local stone, with a roughcast finish and dressed stone quoins. The entrance, located on the west side, is protected by a machicolation, while the windows are narrow slits. The castle's architecture reflects its defensive purpose, with a focus on strength and security rather than comfort or aesthetics.
A really cool set of castle ruins hidden away near the industrial area. This is a cool free site to pop into if you are passing by and have an interest in history and medieval ruins.
Super interesting history, can't believe 6000 lads parked 300 boats here.... just to take a wee hike all the way to Dundalk, to be asked not to go any further;) BTW there's no parking there, we were lucky it wasn't busy and parked by the nearby houses.
Only a 3 star because of what's around it - progress I guess. It's a free access ruin and for what's left of it, it's in a good state. If you are waiting for the ferry or getting off the ferry it's 100% worth the 5min visit. It's got some important Bruce history and worth a wee look.
A small ruined tower, set sadly in a rather unremarkable mixed use area near the Port... while it played a part in the events that sharped theses lands, it's in a very ruined state. A 10 min walk from the Terminal... worth a look, but don't go out of your way to see it. Free entry!
Very little remaining of the old castle walls in a semi industrial part of town. Not a lot to see, but always good when history is preserved.
Not really much left of the castle but a really interesting history.
