Oswald's Well is a natural spring and historic site located in Gloucestershire, England. The well is surrounded by a stone wall and features a small stone building with a pitched roof, housing the spring. The site is believed to be the location where Oswald, a 7th-century king of Northumbria, was killed in 642 AD. According to legend, the well began to flow with blood-red water after Oswald's death, and it has been a place of pilgrimage and healing ever since. Today, visitors can see the well and its surroundings, which include a small car park, picnic area, and walking trails through the surrounding countryside.
Nice little holy well at the side of the road on a housing estate. Prominent sculpture above it (that you can't get to) showing the 'great bird' with St Oswald's arm. Don't know why it's shown as an eagle. It's generally said to have been a raven.
Very good peice of local history or myth. Its only small and its amongst a housing estate - not where you would expect.
Oswald's Well is somewhat underwhelming, partly because the large bronze sculpture that celebrates it's presence is on the other side of a fence and nor readily visible. However, it does have walls to sit on, and a bench overlooking it. This is very handy if you are walking up Masefield Road! It's the seating that gets it the stars. The utterly nonsensical placement of the sculpture loses it stars.
Not a huge amount to see (we couldn't find a way to get near the eagle statue easily). Interesting story though. Don't make a special trip! Also, it's surprisingly slippery underfoot when wet.
Oswald's well is a historic well that was restored by the corporation of Oswestry and there is a monument of golden Eagle above the well.
Seriously unimpressive . Not signposted and the eagle is inaccessible due to being situated beyond in a children's play area A rather mean seating bench next to the road .
