A scale model of the solar system, with planets and other celestial bodies represented in proportion to their actual sizes and distances from the Sun, set amidst a beautiful parkland in Otford, Kent.
Great to include a little bit of science and understanding to the recreation ground. It helps you begin to understand our place in our staggeringly enormous universe. The relative positions and sizes of the sun and planets (and Pluto!) of our own solar system are laid out as they were on 1 Jan 2000. (Mars is on the ground in the mud between two pitches!) Free to visit, of course, just like parts of the real thing.
The Solar System model is a great idea and was fun to explore with the kids. Difficult to try and figure out where the outer planets are without a map... Maybe some additional information at the location of each planet would be a great enhancement.
Nice little place in a quiet sleepy Kent village. Took the kids here for Stargazing. Was a dark moon so had a pretty decent view of the stars considering only half hour out of London. Not been here during the day but if it's as nice as during the night then definitely worth a visit
Walk there often when doing school run, able to vary route depending on time & weather
They said this is the largest scale model of the solar system in the world. I didn't believe it. Then I walked to Pluto...
Nice idea, the sun and a few planets are located in the otford recreational ground. Great place to take you dog at the weekend to socialise as there a plenty if dogs that are let if the lead.
Good for kids
