A medieval stone bridge spanning the River Ure, featuring five arches and a steeply pitched roof, with a chapel at its centre that dates back to the 14th century.
The bridge was built by Thomas Telford between 1825 and 1828, to carry traffic east-west. It was opened in 1830 and remained in use for traffic until 1974. Until the Severn Bridge was built in the 1960s, this was the lowest point downstream that the Severn could be crossed by a road bridge. We parked on the road by 'The lock keepers', there's a footpath that takes you to it.
Lovely walks around Alney Island, historic Bridge built by Brunel. Good spot to watch the Severn Bore. No official parking nearby
Historic bridge now very close to the traffic crossroads. No car parking spaces. You can walk from Gloucester or cycle to here
On Alney Island, built by Telford to replace the medieval bridge, used as the A40 crossing of the Severn until the 70s.
Nice place to walk (.muddy in places around). Amazing old bridge. Piece of history. Crazy to think of cars driving across there.
This is now the longest single-span stone bridge in Europe. Quite a feet given that it was built 200 years ago. When completed, the centre sank significantly(see picture), so they waited to see whether it would fall. Until 1966, all traffic between South Wales and the West of England.
