Step inside and do 1,000 years of time... Oxford Castle & Prison is a visitor attraction and an ancient heritage site, with a past stretching back 100 decades.
Really great tour! Ella, our tour guide was funny and gave interesting information about the castle's long history. St Georges Tower and the crypt were my favorite parts of the castle since they were very old and had connections to the Anarchy. She made the prison interesting as well. It's a great tour, lot of stairs but worth it for what you can see.
Ella our tour guide was super, she really added humour and pleasantness to the experience. I am just slightly disappointed because I expected a bit more. I for some reason expected to see more of the castle and didn't realise that a large portion was actually converted to the hotel. In theory you only really see a small wing of what remains of the castle, including the crypts, and then you are left to make your way through a small museum exhibit after your tour.
Spent a hour with a small group going round the castle tour with Robin, our guide. After the first room, we took the stairs heading up to the roof with great views all around. We enjoyed our time there listening and reading the history of the castle, with the people in its history. We also bought our open top tour bus ticket here as it save a bit of money. Would recommend a visit for a hour or so.
Very nice. It showed how prisoners were treated which was very sad showing the grooves in the floor. There was a little interactive experience near the exit if you didn't want to climb the 101 steps to the top of the tower, but if you do you can climb the mound which is a huge hill and it's included in the price or it's PS2 per person. This is was a very nice day out!
This was actually an accidental stop as we toured Oxford. It's not far from the train station and places to eat, and it's readily apparent that's something big is there as you approach it. we only had time to tour the museum/jail, but it was a great way to catch a slice of Oxford history. Most of it is wheelchair accessible, except for the winding path up the mound and the climb to the top of the tower. There's a lift that will take you from the basement all the way up to the top floor.
A real quirky, pretty, well maintained and well run restaurant and hotel. The choice of food is very good and cooked to perfection. The service is second to none with very tentative waiters/waitresses. A must visit if you're in or around Oxford and looking for somewhere extra special to celebrate with a top drawer meal.
