Park in the Past is an open-air museum and experimental archaeology site located near Wrexham and is home to the UK's only full size working replica Roman Auxiliary Fort as well as boasting one of Wales cleanest and best kept lakes for swimming and paddling. We welcome you to enjoy a walk through 120 acres of rewilded country park, that after extensive work has transformed an old quarry site into an ancient landscape complete with wild flowers and grasses that were common here 2000 years ago. You can explore our Roman Fort, watch our Roman soldiers building it, find out about Roman and Iron Age life in Britain. Our 35 acre lake is open for wild swimming, SUP and Kayaking, as well as being a tranquil haven for wildlife, including a Beaver!
Amazing place for either a relaxing walk in nature or to learn about history in the huge Roman fort. Staff are lovely and so friendly. Amazing work being done here a must see.
Id give more than 5 stats if i could. Great day out for the while family. Paul the owner is making something fantastic here. Educational and beautiful definitely need to give this place a visit if your in the area.
The Park in the Past is a wonderful concept and fulfilment of a dream. For us as motorhomers, this is a special and unique place to stay overnight. Thanks to owner Paul, this old Quarry is being created into an outstanding community area. Whilst still work in progress the wild flower, conservation meadows are fabulous, the unique creation of a Roman fotress humbling and the lakeside beach just wonderful. I can't wait for the off grid camping. Paul, build it and they will come. PS10 per night with services and the warmest welcome. Come support this amazing space.
We went on an event day, so there were lots of things going on; individual tents set up with different skills and trades being demonstrated. All the "Romans" were extremely knowledgeable about what their roles were and were very able to answer any questions I threw at them. The site itself is still being constructed using only volunteers and traditional materials, so the Roman Fort was really only a wooden fence, but there were traditional tents and buildings inside it. There was a cafe on site too for teas and cakes. Only bad thing about it was the rather long walk to the Fort from the car park. Having a bad hip made that a very long and slow walk.
Nice short walk around the fort and lake. Somewhat ruined by free running dogs and dog mess! Unfortunately the case with most dog friendly places, a small minority of dog owners that ruin it for everyone else. Although a little pricey for a walk around, they had cafe, toilets etc. we would go back again when events are on. The children enjoyed stroking the goats. Litter free, plenty of parking, good friendly service.
Good nature walk around the lake and fort. Helpful wardens. There are a couple of structures in the process of being built. There is a floating shop at the edge of the lake selling ice creams etc. There are SUPBs and kayaks for hire at the lakeside and a grassed picnic area by the side of the lake.
