This visitor centre and parking area is situated near the Paxton Pits Nature Reserve, a 360-acre site featuring lakes, woodland, and grassland. The centre offers information and exhibitions about the local wildlife and history, while the surrounding area provides opportunities for walking, birdwatching, and picnicking.
Great to just wander and chill. Volunteer staff at the visitor centre were very friendly and helpful. See the view from a hide.
Paxton Pits visitor centre and the surrounding lakes is a fine way to make use of disused gravel pits. There is a visitor centre which shows you what can be seen in the area and explains about the conversion of the gravel pits to a nature reserve. It is a popular place for people to visit and a number of bird watching hides make sure visitors are comfortable. Dogs are allowed on the reserve but not into the hides. The car park does contain a height barrier so if you visit in a high sided vehicle such as a motor caravan you are forced to park on the side of the road. There were plenty of bird using the pits during my March visit.
Good place to walk around and loved the trails/set routes we could go down. It was great to be in touch with nature here. However we were a bit disappointed by the visitor centre. It felt unwelcome and school like instead of a place to get refreshments and learn more about the place. A refurbishment may be helpful to get more people coming through the doors and generate further interest.
We visited just after the heavy rains of storm Henk. Lots of wildlife visible from hides. Many paths were blocked due to flooding. This is a lovely place to visit and will return when weather is better.
What a great place to take long family walks, if you're like our family who enjoys looking put for birds and wildlife then this is a great place
