Visit the Peak District Mining Museum and explore what life was like for the local lead miners. Children enjoy the mouse trail, geology treasure hunt, dressing up clothes and tunnels (and so do many adults)! We also have thousands of exhibits from the tiny mineral samples through to the Richard Trevithick Water Pressure Engine. Go on our mine tours (11am & 1pm) to a real fluorspar mine where gold has been discovered. Then pan for minerals and try out our mini diggers. Mine tours are available on days when the museum is open.
Well worth a visit. Really well laid out inside the museum, child friendly. Strikes a lovely balance of educational content and activity. Teaches you about mining tools and techniques. There's climbing nooks made for crawling around. We paid for both the museum and the mining tour. Short walk away was the mine, our guide was knowledgeable and efficient at getting through the content while keeping everyone moving. It was live, tactile and active with some sifting at the end for precious stones and metals. Unfortunately, we only sifted fools gold, but it was a wonderful time.
Had a brilliant tour with Theo through the mine today. Thoroughly enjoyed listening to his knowledge about the workings of the mine and stories about the period. The museum was also well finished and interactive, great for children. Fully recommend a visit - will return at some point in the next year given the ticket allows revisits within a year
Fantastic experience - there's so much to see in only one day but fortunately the tickets are valid for a year. It also does excellent tours of the nearby mine looking at the industry from a social and geological perspective. Also within the museum there are lots of tunnels that you can climb up as if you are in a mine and an extensive mineral collection. They are trying to move to a new site within the next few years and I wish them the best of luck.
During our stay we visited the Museum and had a chance to visit the mine. The Musem was great, full of knowledge and many examples of ore, rocks and minerals. But the highlight of this trip was Chris and the mine tour, out of all the mines we visited this one was the best, Chris has a real passion for what he does and it shows on his tours, the knowledge he shared was great and we did not feel rushed and had time to take photos and ask questions. Very educational tour.
A very interesting and informative museum, combined with a super exciting trip down an old mine. A genuinely great way to share a couple of hours with gran, grandad and our 11 year old son. The tour of the mine on an otherwise rainy and grey day, was fantastic!
A wonderful museum and tour of the mine. We didn't prepare enough time for the museum which had so many artifacts and information. We will return again for sure. There are tunnels throughout for children to clamber through which is a great idea. Interactive exhibits. We went on the tour with Chris who was very good. He listened to the children and answered as many questions as he could. The mine was interesting to see and lots to learn about. Ending with some panning which again was a great idea for the children. This will be a memorable visit for anyone who visits. And very good value for money. I really recommend a visit here.
