Description

Our museum sits in a 6 acre site and visitors walk through time from 1888- 2013. During your tour you will hear how life was "within these walls" through a quality headset which incorporates the voices of ex-staff who worked within the former Victorian prison. At normal pace the tour takes about 1.5 hours, however once in you can spend as long as you want and examine the former prison in detail and at the end of the tour you can visit our newly opened "Refuge Cafe" named after the Harbour of Safe Refuge which the original inmates supported by breaking granite stones by hand at the nearby Stirlinghill Quarry. Something for all ages to learn from and enjoy. Open daily 10:00-18:00 with last entry being 16:30.

An amazing museum, we really enjoyed our visit. It was extremely interesting and immersive. I liked how there were personal stories and experiences incorporated into the audio tour. We spent two hours there as we liked to read information boards etc. I wish there were more places like this as it was really enjoyable. The price is reasonable and the members of staff are nice. The toilets there I think are the cleanest toilets I ever seen.

Great day out for all the family. A great insight into what went on behind closed doors when the prison was still in use. I would recommend using the head set to listen to the information and some of the stories from the former guards. Wheelchair accessible too (some cell doors were too narrow for manual wheelchair to see in. Phone came in handy for taking pictures)

What an interesting and informative museum. The audio guide was top notch. I had a great visit and left feeling I had learned something I would have never known about. Highly recommend if you have free time and in the area

Visited on a Sunday and spent 2 hours touring the place. All of us had our own headsets and my kids aged 9 and 7 were entertained throughout. The price was very good for the tour and the staff could not have been more friendly. Definitely worth a visit

An interesting place to check out. I didn't know what to expect with a prison museum but I had a good enough time. Exciting? No. Informative? Yes. The audio tour is well done with parts from the former guards. Little concerned about the longevity of this place because when we were there it was basically empty.

Had a fabulous morning going round the prison, got a spooky pic in one of the cells The staff were great answered all my questions I had on the prison, think however ( which is not a criticism) that more could be added to recordings maybe a sit and listen story of one of the prisoners or staff history would be great. I am a true crime nut so if your like me you will love it here. I need to go back as didn't get to read all the messages and letters on the walls .
