A few miles north of Exeter, Poltimore House stands four-square and solid against a background of dark trees. Now encased in scaffolding and sheet metal it awaits restoration. The first house was built circa 1550 by Richard Bampfylde, and extended in subsequent centuries. After several years of neglect and vandalism the house was acquired by Poltimore House Trust, which now has ambitious plans for its restoration as a focal point for the arts, business, communities and wellbeing. The Trust is seeking a diverse range of skills and support to achiewve this. We have a regular programme of events, and Branches Cafe is open most weekends for brunches, lunches, cream teas and delicious cakes - see the website or Facebook page for details.
So love this place ! Will take a LOT of money to rebuild but it's set in an amazing back drop of beautiful countryside and has great potential. Fab coffee shop with great choice of food and snacks. Easy parking
Fascinating to see a house being put back together. Amazing plasterwork, and you can see the clear development of the house from Tudor Manor to 1830s grand house. All run by volunteers trying to save this historic building. Well worth a visit and there is a lovely cafe for lunch and snacks. So sad to see the damage done by the recent arson attack.
What a lovely old building, sadly in need of a lot of restoration but it's on going. There is a lovely cafeteria doing cakes and bacon rolls all run by volunteers.
Great location. Some very good work is being done by the Poltimore Trust. The house is run and maintained all by volunteers who are doing an amazing job. Parking is free. Donations to view the house is available for people to contribute. This is a great cause.
Well worth a visit and walk around the gardens. Worth supporting as it would be lovely to see it restored to its former glory. Also nice cafe.
Poltimore House is a fascinating Grade 2 listed manor with an amazing history dating back from 1550 right through to the current time. The property has been a private home, educational college, NHS hospital and has suffered fire damage, theft and vandalism from 1987 to 2000. Now under the safe protection of the Poltimore House Trust, the property is the subject of major ongoing restoration, currently preserved from the elements by a metal roof installed in 2005. The house is open to the public monthly, plus for occasional full guided tours and for various special events through the year. Entrance is currently free of charge, voluntary contributions are welcomed and is managed and run by a team of dedicated volunteers with a great knowledge of the estate's history. Well worth visiting to gain an insight into this historic local property and explore the beautiful grounds, also an excellent cafe is adjacent to the main house.
