With its extensive history and relaxed elegance, we welcome you to our secret corner of England, the ancestral seat of the 11th Earl of St Germans and home of the Eliot family. This incredible Grade-I listed priory and house was remodelled by Sir John Soane in the 18th century, for renowned landscape gardener Humphrey Repton to then create the gardens and park.
The Stable Cafe - the Beyond Paradise location for the Shipton Abbott cafe. One snooty staff member who proclaimed 'We're shut!' as I requested a pot of tea. However, other staff were very accommodating and provided the necessary. Worth a quick visit - free parking, no entrance fee (apart from the main house). Quirky.
We didn't visit the gardens but attended a festival being held there - the festival was excellent, despite the rain. The only gripes were with the marshals, who were utter jobsworths and the festival attendees who left their rubbish and detritus everywhere - disgusting!! The youngsters who are right-on, PC, woke and allegedly care about the environment, don't give a toss about leaving mountains of garbage, for others to clean up. In the hook-up camper van field, the grown-ups left the place spotless... Go the oldies - respect!!
We were here for 4 days commuting each day for the Tunes In The Park festival. We had a great time and the location is lovely and not too far from home (about a 40 minute drive) The music was excellent, comedians were funny although a little too much swearing when you have kids in tow! The food was lovely but way too overpriced!! The main thing we didn't like was the parking, it took a good 25 minutes just to get out of the car park each night. There should have been more stewards directing traffic around the field and not just a couple at the exit, it was a free-for-all! I had on 2 seperate nights people shout abuse at me as I tried to get in their lane. There were literally 1 or 2 stewards directing traffic and several security men hovering around the exit/entrance and that was it! It also seemed that buses and taxis had preference and the rest of us were at a standstill to let them in and out. Also, on arrival parking was extremely slow. We barely moved whilst on the main road while stewards were trying to fill empty spaces this needs more organisation as they were quite slow.
TUNES festival. Amazing. Really well organised, clean for the amount of people, all facilities excellent and a great atmosphere with some top, top acts.
A stunning house and gardens. Enjoy a walk and then hang out in the stables. Throw a pot, indulge in a simple but perfect lunch or a cheeky Friyay cocktail with live music
Attended Tunes in the Park over the weekend. The grounds are beautiful and all the Spa d lent themselves to this family friendly event. Lots to do for children adults and every taste catered for successfully. Had a great experience
