Me and my Mum visited this absolutely incredible place over the weekend! I've always wanted to visit, being in the industry myself, and thought we'd give it a try. We had a lovely and informative tour of all the old machines and how they worked. It was great to get an insight to what it would have been like during the Industrial Revolution. We also had a coffee and a cake in the little cafe. I wish more people knew and visited this place it's a true hidden gem of Burnley!
Echoing other reviews! Had a tour with David today and was totally drawn into the intriguing history of the mill. Would 100% recommend getting on the free tour which runs 1230 or 230. Learn where "letting your hair down" and "family heirloom" come from. The size of the boilers and "Peace", the beautiful Victorian engine, are worth the visit alone. There was a ribbon and a Jacquard loom. Really was fascinating and in particular if you watch The great British sewing bee or were a fan of Fred Dibnah, I would say, you'll enjoy your visit.
Attended their Open Day Event with tours & working spinning machines in action! I was in awe at viewing the large weaving shed, the engine room, & all the other areas around the museum as I've lot's of knowledge spoken to many who have worked in the textile industry so this was perfect to see all in action. I absolutely loved this & really enjoyed all the viewings, had a coffee at the Vale, whilst listening to live music, also there's lot's of displayed art work that you van purchase, definitely recommend a visit here.
My previous visit to Queen Street Mil was 54 years ago whilst studying Textiles at Bolton College. In 1969 this was a fully working mill with nearly a 1000 looms pounding away......sadly a lot quieter now. It is thanks to Burnley Council and the loyal volunteers that have given this monumental piece of industrial and social history a new role in the local history of the area. It was wonderful to pay a visit and soak up the atmosphere . I do feel that there is so much opportunity to bring the place alive not just the industrial history but the social history? Maybe a partnership with a local university or U3A group to add and enrich the visit. A wonderful experience and lovely cafe with helpful staff who were so welcoming. Value for money....cant be beaten.
Very interesting, lovely staff and lots of tactile things to learn about. Would have been fantastic to see a loom demonstration.
What a brilliant survival - a working mill with its looms and compound steam engine still in working order. Fantastic tour by Richard who really knew his stuff. Nice cafe, very friendly and helpful staff.
