The Quoyness Chambered Cairn is a Neolithic tomb located on the island of South Ronaldsay, Orkney Islands, Scotland. The cairn dates back to around 2900-2500 BC and is one of the most impressive and well-preserved ancient monuments in the region. It consists of a large, circular mound of stones surrounded by a ditch and bank, with a narrow entrance passage leading to a series of inner chambers. The tomb is built using local flagstone and is remarkably intact, with many of its original stones still in place. The Quoyness Chambered Cairn is a significant archaeological site, providing valuable insights into the lives and burial practices of the Neolithic people who built it.
Another super cairn to visit... just take your kneelers! Super location and easy walk to get there.
Fantastic piece of history! The cairn is jusy along from the beach so it has great views. I think the fact that its a bit out the way adds to the mystery of the place. I would if you are able go inside the cairn. The entrance is small and you have to crawl but it is worth it inside.
Very interesting! Very small doorway to the interior (you'll need to crawl in). Worth the 20 min walk from the parking area. And definitely worth the short crawl to the interior.
Really good free location with a nice walk to get to it. Incredible if you can get inside (which requires you to walk on your hands and knees.) If you are a big person you may struggle to get through the entrance as two members of our group had to stand outside. Definitely worth the visit if you think you're slim enough though!
Difficult to find at first and the walk is much further than expected. But the beach is stunning
