The RAF Sculthorpe Heritage Centre tells the history and stories of North Norfolks only USAF atomic base. Once the largest and most strategically important American airbase, home to 10,000 personnel. For over a decade it was the atomic deterrent against the Soviet Union. We are open on the first Sunday of the month, but please check our social media or website for all our events and keep up to date! We also offer homemade cake all made in our 5 star rated kitchen. We can also offer vegan and gluten free cakes. Why not purchase genuine US Soda and Chips from our 5 star rated cafe! Dogs are very welcome.
We went to the inaugural American Day which had a small car show and some other attractions but the heritage centre is permanent. The weather was great and consequently I think far more people turned up than they may have expected and queues for food and drink were very long. There is a bar there but it was closed and you were asked to leave if you entered, I'm not sure why they left the door open. We were redirected to another site entrance when we arrived and the access roads were all used for parking from some distance away. I would point out that this is a very small centre compared to most aviation or military museums. But it was very interesting, you could take your dog around also.
A fantastic Heritage Centre commemorating and recording in wonderful detail the events and history of the USAF's sojourn here, hidden away in this seemingly sleepy corner of West Norfolk.
Always a welcome when coming here from well informed staff. Often find a few people here and eavesdropping on their conversations they are pleased to be there sharing their own stories and often bringing mementoes to donate. Will look forward to seeing the museum grow which I sure it will. The recent recent to a model show was well attended with lots of models on show and brilliant to see them all on show. Now a regular for me and my partner on their open days. Post edit: The museum has now moved to the building next door. Volunteers have done an excellent job in renovating it and making more space for their expanding collection.
Absolutely fascinating display of RAF Sculthorpre memorabilia. Really interesting displays and well laid out. Check out the opening times before going. You won't be disappointed
Fantastic experience after being stationed there between 1948 and 1988, found a photo with my father-in-law and another one with my brother-in-law in them
Lots of nice "personal" stories on the information boards, and some interesting artifacts. A small museum, but dedicated keen volunteers.
