Bowling Green Marsh is on the east bank of the Exe Estuary, within easy walking distance of both Topsham High Street and our shop at Darts Farm. As a great place for wildlife, it is recognised as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), as well as a Natura 2000 and Ramsar site. There is no RSPB parking for the reserve but there is a council car park nearby. There are no toilets on the site. Nearest toilets at Dart Farm reserve.
A lovely little hid overlooking the estuary. The volunteers are all really friendly and there's a great area for the kids to play whilst you're watching the birds. I'd check the tide times, as the hide is meant to have a lot more to see at high tide. There's no parking on site, so you'll either have to park on the road up the hill (0.4km walk) or follow their directions and park in the town pay and display car park which is about a 1km walk (but a lovely walk to do back via the goat path!)
This is a fabulous location for a quiet walk or cycle ride. Good paths which are very accessible. The nearest car parking is near the Lighter Inn on Topsham Quay. Lots of birds and wildlife to see at any time of the day. Well worth a visit.
A lovely short walk from the train station to a tranquil well looked after wetland, where you can see lots of different birds. Well worth being a RSPB member and contributing to this, and many other, sanctuaries for beautiful birds.
Absolutely beautiful spot. Loads of birds to see all through the year but particularly during migration and winter. Best to go around high tide when birds come further up the estuary. But whenever you come there will be things to see and peaceful surroundings to enjoy. Separate room with kids activities and tea and coffee to buy (I think!). That room had floor to ceiling glass so lovely for the kids to take things in. Often RSPB staff on hand to provide advice too.
we walked to this reserve which was quite pleasant and well signposted. Not many birds to see along the way , There is a hide for families to enjoy, with an outside area for a picnic. We walked on but became much too muddy to walk.so turned around and followed signs to Topsham, a lovely surprise a nice Estuary and sea birds.
A great place to introduce children to bird watching and general interest in nature. There's a bird hide for pros and a separate relaxed area for children. A couple of sofas birds cards and a library. Its heated too. There's even some hot drinks and snacks on offer (probably weekends only).
