Fairburn Ings protects a mixture of habitats. Wetland areas created by subsidence include open water, wet grassland, reedbed and wet woodland. While other habitats, including dry grassland, deciduous woodland and lagoons, have been restored on the former coal spoil tips. There is a huge variety of wildlife including, bittern, green woodpecker, willow tit, spoonbill and kingfisher. Our team carefully manages these habitats to keep Fairburn rich in wildlife. We have a visitor centre, parking, refreshments, wildlife trails, viewing areas. Dogs are welcome on site but they must be kept on a lead to avoid disturbing the wildlife. The carpark is open 6am to 8pm every day. The visitor centre in winter (November to March) is open 10am to 4pm.
Lovely well kept nature reserve, good for prams, great walks. The only downside was at the cafe/hot drink station, 70p extra charge for 50ml oat milk... I understand that oat milk is more expensive than cow's milk but why are you making a profit from it?
we have been visiting since I was a small child & love it here. it's always so peaceful, tidy & well maintained. our visit today blessed us with seeing a spoonbill for the first time! also lots of other baby birds around at the moment, which were lovely to see too.
Tuesday 7th May A really good site to visit. Plenty of different walks, or mix and match as you wish. All pretty level walking on made footpaths. Pushchair and wheelchair access and routes all accessible. Vending machine and cold drinks and snacks available on site. Staff friendly and helpful, plenty of places to sit on the walks round and good hides set out on the site. Parking for members is free, get a ticket from the machine and display on the dashboard with the membership card.
Great nature reserve, good footpaths with plenty of wildlife to be seen. For those who enjoy a good walk a perfect place. Free parking for RSPB members
Attended a Spoonbill experience event which was terrific. Access to areas of the reserve not usually open to the public and saw spoonbills as well as kestrels and cormorant.
Lovely walk, thankfully the weather was good. Well looked after footways and well trained dogs, they all made sure their owners were kept on a lead.
