Part of the largest area of ancient woodland in the Severn Vale, with managed rides and glades, dead wood and other key habitat features. There is scrub and coppice habitat for breeding nightingales. Home to important birds, plants and invertebrates. The rare Tintern spurge can be seen growing on bare ground along some of the paths June-August. *The car park is closed in the autumn and winter*
This would be a 5 star if the gates were open. Very enjoyable, and the tracks are starting to dry up. I had to park a good 1/4 of a mile away, and it's a fast flowing road. Speeding traffic was a worry.
Gorgeous woodland featuring a hide. Parking problematic as the car park seems to only be open on weekends (?). We parked in a (frankly disgusting) lay-by/bus stop - marked with a parking "P" sign - on the main road and walked up. This would of been fine, but we had our 3 year old with us, and therefore had to carry him due to the very narrow path and speed of the road.
I've been once before and it was ok I thought I'd give it another try before being quick to judge the tracks are absolutely awful, very wet and muddy! Not for children or older generations at all! I barley made it back to the 4pm shut time It stank like sewage bog water, you can hear cars in the distance and perhaps houses are near by I could hear nature at its finest with a hint of Rihanna in the background. Save yourself the trouble and don't visit! I won't be visiting again.
Parking was closed off so visitors were parking in a bus stop and we found a space at a nearby fuel station. The place was VERY muddy - more a wellies walk than even a hiking boots walk. We saw a woodpecker among many things.
Should have read the reviews before I went. Weekday gates locked up and no other suitable parking on such a busy road. Didn t get to visit waste of time.
One of my favourite places. The hide is a great place to see Nightingales and the wood has breeding Goshawk. A great place for families and Dog walkers. White Admiral Butterflies can be seen in late Spring early Summer and Deer visit the pond to drink. A perfect place to spend a long Summers day.
