The wetlands are part of the Arun Valley floodplain and are criss-crossed by ditches which host some incredibly rare and special creatures and plants. The grassland, pools and scrapes provide feeding areas for our wintering wildfowl and nesting areas for our wading birds. On higher ground there are wildflower meadows full of butterflies in summer. Woodland, scrub and hedgerow are all important for our breeding songbirds, such as nightingales, blackcaps and whitethroat. We have nature trails, toilets, parking, cafe, shop and viewing areas. Dogs are not allowed on the Wetland nature trail or in the hides. Dogs on leads are permitted in the visitor centre and on the public footpaths and parts of the Wooded Heathland Trail.
Well.managed and beautiful landscape. Lovely for just a walk, amazing for wildlife watching. Spend an hour, or spend the day. Less wetland visible in hooter months, but that does not distraction from the views and chances of spotting herons, osprey, eagle or goldfinch. Many other species available to a keen eye! Thank you too all those who play custodian to this beautiful retreat.
Really enjoyed our visit here. Car park was almost full so struggled to park somewhere that wasn't in a puddle, once on the reserve it never felt too busy. I hired binoculars for PS7 as I forgot my own. Was impressed with the quality and the ease of doing this. Saw numerous different birds in hides, they were all clean and tidy. I'm not an experienced bird watcher so made use of the guides on the walls and in front of the windows to aid with identification. Just walking around the main loop was great with loads after bird noise and really nice people information plaques
Some great walks with stunning views of the south downs. We didn't go into the paid section, but plenty of other things to see and do. Fun playground for the kids, and you might even run into some interesting animals!
Was happy to see an eagle, although at a far distance. Other than that and a few buzzards, the best things to photograph were the sparrows in the car park. If you're looking for a walk, it's lovely, but from a photography standpoint it's not great.
Fantastic reserve, very easy to walk round with good hides and plenty of Nightingales singing at the right time of the year It's worth keeping an eye out for the White-Tailed Eagles also as they are close by.
This is to assist with navigation after the visitor centre shuts at 4.00 (the reserve stays open until dusk) as we found it difficult to find our way onto the main reserve - the heathland trail is clearly signposted from the south of the car park. If you head into the visitor centre enclosure, there is a notice board with a small map that you can photograph, that is helpful once on the reserve. From there, go around the buildings to the right, thru a small gate marked to play area, then left thru a 5bar gate. You will then find yourself on the reserve, and can walk down to the marshes and ponds. I hope this helps. There is also a public footpath signposted from the car park, that will take you past the little church and you end up in the same place. I hope this helps. Lovely little reserve btw!! Allow at least 2 hrs to visit.
