This nature reserve and education centre is located in Purfleet, Essex, and offers a range of activities and facilities for visitors of all ages. The centre is surrounded by 129 hectares of wetlands, grasslands, and woodland, providing a habitat for a diverse range of wildlife including birds, insects, and mammals. Visitors can explore the reserve through a network of trails and hides, getting up close to nature and spotting species such as avocets, lapwings, and marsh harriers. The education centre offers interactive exhibits, workshops, and events, focusing on environmental education and conservation. The centre also has a café, shop, and picnic areas, making it a great day out for families and nature enthusiasts.
Love it here during the week is quiet sat with the binoculars watching the big cargo boats going by. Not many birds as we had a thunderstorm whilst we were there. Brilliant to watch
This is a lovely place for a walk and spotting birds. However, it was quite muddy in places, so walking boots or wellies is a good idea. The cafe serves a variety of hot and cold food and snacks, which are reasonably priced. If you are not a member of the RSPB, you will need to pay to get in. There is plenty of parking.
Delivered JP's Wild Honeys prize winning honey from Rainham marshes to the instore shop at the centre so they can offer local produce from the area to the public
Good reserve (Rainham Marshes not Purfleet but Google won't let me change it!) for wetland species, and pretty reliable for views of marsh harriers. Also worth walking the path outside the reserve overlooking the river for waders in particular. Visitor centre wasn't serving cooked food when I visited but had hot drinks and snacks. Easy to get to by train from London, out of Fenchurch St.
Great place for a walk (the outer circuit is 2.4m) even if you're a non twitcher like me. Nice and flat with plenty to see and hides to shelter in if necessary . Lovely cafe at the end too
Great cafe, high above the paths of the nature walk. Wheelchair accessible. Friendly staff, a busy place with bird watchers, school children and retired people.
