Home to the legend of Robin Hood, Sherwood Forest and Budby South Forest are alive with nature, history and folklore, and it's all yours to explore. Managed by the RSPB, this is a Site of Special Scientific Interest with one of Europe's most important assemblages of ancient oak trees. It is home to a diverse range of wildlife, from woodpeckers and nightjars to some of the UK's most endangered invertebrate species. Sherwood also resounds with tales of legendary characters on our costumed storytelling tours and our annual Robin Hood Festival. Play, discover and leave with stories of your own. We have a Visitor Centre with shop, cafe, toilets, Changing Places room, accessible parking, trails to explore and events throughout the year.
A lovely walk through Sherwood Forest along mostly easy to follow paths. This is a great walk for the whole family. Known of course as the home of Robin Hood, Sherwood is also known for its ancient trees. one of the oldest you will come across on this walk is the Major Oak, which is estimated to be around 1,100 years old.
On my 2nd visit in August (first was in late December), I was struck by how quiet it was. No sounds or sightings of wildlife or birds. Found this very strange. Nevertheless it is a beautiful historic place and I absolutely adore the little artisan shops filled with locally made items.
From Nottingham, you can take the Sherwood Arrow line for only 2 pounds in Victoria Bus Station, and after almost 2 hours, you are at the front door of the Forest. Lovely place with the only drawback that there are some people driving motorcycles in the footpaths. The rest very lovely and very beautiful oaks, chestnuts, beechs, birchs, and some Scott pines too.
We had a lovely time hear. The focus on nature was excellent and there was real balance between nature and the myth if Robin Hood. Some comments have suggested it is less joyful. Perhaps, there are less children running around with Bows and arrows. However, I feel the balance is better now with shift towards looking at the forest as a landscape.
Beautiful place to visit, with lot's of adventure in there. Had amazing time engaging in the valentines special trail. Highly recommend place to visit specially during summer
Beautiful walk that was wheelchair accessible. The staff advised us to take the oak trail as that was the most accessible for me. It is an all natural path with some slopes and bumpy parts so take that into consideration if you are a manual user.
