This ancient woodland is a haven for nature lovers and history enthusiasts alike. The wood is home to a diverse range of flora and fauna, with many species of trees, plants, and animals calling it home. The woodland floor is carpeted with bluebells in the spring, and the canopy above is a vibrant green in the summer. Visitors can explore the wood's many trails, including the ancient Ridgeway Path, which dates back to prehistoric times. The wood is also dotted with ancient monuments, including the Ramscombe Long Barrow, a 5,000-year-old Neolithic tomb. The wood's rich history and natural beauty make it a must-visit destination for anyone looking to connect with nature and the past.
HIDDEN GEM If you need to get away and don't want to see many people then this is your place, take the dogs and hit the path. There has always been so much parking.
Fantastic woodland walk with Lola dog. Lot's of shaded area's while walking in hot weather. Pretty little stream's for your dog to cool off in and have a drink. Large field area with lots of picnic tables with access to the stream.
Lovely spot to go for a picnic, bike ride, walk or just to relax. Can get busy in the summer tourist months, but as local we visit out of season and sometimes can go hours without seeing another person. Well-kept and plenty of parking.
Lovely place walked the 2.5 mile red route very peaceful loads of places for my dog to explore and streams to paddle in. Would love to come back and explore some of the other trails. Saw a deer frightened the life out of me when it jumped up and ran from near the path deeper into the woods. Careful about visiting the little cafe in your way out though as you may take on all the calories you just lost walking, lovely little place.
Great area for taking the kids on a mini adventure. Great wood is down a long track with a large parking area. In the middle of a large forks which has areas for BBQs there is plenty of space to have a relaxed picnic. When we visited it was really busy.. Hundreds of people on the picnic area. However if you go on the circular walk which offers a really nice for through the woods it was really quiet. The parking is pay and display but there seems to only be a machine at the entrance... Is possible to park almost a mile away.. so you have to walk back durn to get a ticket. When we were there no one seemed to be paying... But that's at your risk. There is a toilet block which was surprisingly clean.
Had an amazing walk. Martha the lab loves water so she was in her element . Glad we chose to walk the way we did getting the hilly parts out of the way. There is also a nice picnic area.
