This 14th-century gatehouse is a rare surviving example of a medieval monastery entrance. The two-story building features a striking facade with a pointed archway, adorned with carved stone and topped with a pitched roof. The gatehouse's stone walls are punctuated by narrow windows and a central doorway, while the interior boasts a grand hall with a high ceiling and large windows.
Really surprised that there was so much to see here. You never can tell from this more off beat National Trust (sometimes you just get a room with not much in it sometimes you get something like this ~ quite often on the app/guidebook there is a single line of detail). There is a gate house with artifacts in it as well as information boards. There was also a guide at the enterance to help you. There was also Lady Chapel. This too had a very helpful guide and great boards with information. There were also toilets - very unusual for this type of property. The local area is also nice with a lovely duck pond and a great large green. The children and dogs loved this. Would recommend a visit.
Visited for to 2019 Remembrance parade. Can be dated back to 900AD, the gate house that can be seen is dated around 1475. Not too much to see and the actual gates in a bad state of repair. Cromwell was a significant person in the gate houses current guise and its previous dismantling and sale. Some stone was sold to Trinity College, Cambridge. The grounds are well kept the church locate to the gate houses NW is in good repair and the church bells sound great when rung.
Very interesting, not much to see but to touch the stones and feel history, good information available on site about the monks chasing holy relics.
Just along the road behind the gatehouse are the remains of a motte and bailey castle, which has a later icehouse built into it.
Just a rainy summer morning walk...but amazing to be so close to this remnant of human craftsmanship. Green ivy leaves covering the length of the abbey wall are gorgeous and it feels a bit like taking a step back in time...
Beautiful grounds to walk around it would be a lovely wedding venue absolutely stunning highly recommend looking around!
