This 18th-century Palladian-style mansion boasts stunning architecture, beautifully landscaped gardens, and an impressive art collection featuring works by Gainsborough, Reynolds, and Hogarth. The house's opulent interior showcases intricate plasterwork, ornate furnishings, and exquisite chandeliers, while the surrounding parkland offers scenic walks, a tranquil lake, and a picturesque village.
Much better than expected. We got a warm welcome from Debbie.. that was lovely as I had been slightly nervous booking due to some bad reviews. But we were pleasantly surprised. Love the entrance and the grand atmosphere. Good outdoor and indoor seating. But this is an old house. Renovation is taking place. For the price and area we were very happy. One star less due to one of the doors being broken. But if you don't mind self catering.. An old building and you just need a comfy bed.. this is the place for you.
Stayed just 3 weeks after opening and the new owners are doing absolutely brilliant. Very reasonable price and an excellent nights sleep. Lovely large and clean room. Beautiful 16th century building. A few teething problems to sort which they are very much in the process of sorting (low water pressure/loose door handles/kitchen was being installed so no breakfast available) but I will most definitely be looking to stay there again when I expect the new owners will have a 4/5 star rating after seeing to these few minor issues.
DO NOT STAY HERE! We didn't read reviews before we booked and they validated all our concerns/disappointments... Paid PS55 for the "nicer room"; it was not worth it. The whole place is run down, rusted and overgrown - the first thing you see as you come down the driveway is a horse float full of junk... Our room had no heating - the radiator was rusted over; a view overlooking more junk and an overgrown garden, at 11:00am the (battery powered) fire alarm started beeping. We had to take it off the wall and take the battery out to sleep. At 6:00am the one in the hallway started!! I called the owner but he didn't come and sort it - reading previous posts he doesn't sound very helpful. Got out of there ASAP the next day - but not after finding long black hair on the handtowel I used to dry my face. YUCK!
We arrived 8.30pm on a Saturday to a warmly lit, Olde English reception area complete with fireplace, settle chairs, flagstones and low beamed ceilings. Michelle our housekeeper took our bags up old rickety wooden stairs to room 14 with its old oak door opening onto a twin bedded suite, large and beautifully furnished with a large seating area, large sofa and twin aspect bay windows with window seats, beautiful drapes and sumptuous cushions.Good TV reception on a large flat screen TV. The en-suite bathroom with large, long bath was old but spacious and loads of hot water to enjoy a long relaxing soak. I wished we could stay another couple of days!!
I'll start off by saying that the four-poster bed was probably the only redeeming feature here. Pros: - The four-poster bed was very comfortable and made me and my partner say "wow" when we got into the room. Unfortunately my partner is quite tall so the bed was a bit too small for him. - The parking was good and straightforward. - Nice rural area - there seems to be a farm close by. - We had a private bathroom - although it was across the hall from us, so not very private. - The communal areas in the house look very nice. Several chess boards, nice sofas and seats. We didn't get to use these as we arrived late at night and left early in the morning. - The furniture in the room looked nice and well cleaned. It had a four-poster bed, two night stands, a dresser with mirror, a love seat and two armchairs with a table featuring some magazines. - There were three (THREE!) air fresheners/diffusers in the bedroom. After reading a couple of older reviews, we think this might be because people were complaining the rooms smelled of mould.. Nevertheless, it smelled nice. Cons: - We arrived around 10:30pm. The booking website and the email said we could check-in until 11:30, but when we got there, everything seemed dark and we couldn't find a way in. We checked the email, which told us where the key was, but couldn't find the lock to match the key. After walking around the house several times, a member of staff came running out and told us his boss told him to close the big door at 10pm. Behind this door is the door which the key we had opens. He didn't seem to know that the website states check-in till 11:30. He then gave us a key, showed us our room and bathroom, and left. - The bathroom was definitely not clean. There were.. let's say 'marks,' in the toilet bowl, there were hairs in the shower, and I'm almost sure there were some rat/mouse/some animal's feces behind the toilet. I also glanced up at the ceiling and saw several spider webs with insect carcasses and the paint seemed to be peeling off from the ceiling. - The bathroom was very cold, and the shower would not get properly warm, which made for a very uncomfortable shower. - The room itself was okay, but only the main light worked. The second light switch on the wall didn't seem to do anything. The light by the bed didn't work and neither did the light in the closet. The closet seemed to have a lot of water damage and the shelves didn't look like they'd been cleaned in months. - The staff didn't really seem to know what to do. As stated earlier, we were handed a key and didn't have to sign in or leave info anywhere. In the morning we couldn't find a member of staff, until we walked into the housekeeper, who said she didn't know how checkout worked. She said the man who checked us in was on 'the bog.' She went to the toilet, knocked on the door, and after he opened the door, asked him how checkout worked. In the end we just handed her our key and left.
Agreed with previous comment about nice looking place but that's where the positives end. Booked one of our workmen in there last week and he was not happy and I felt guilty because I booked it. Night 1: shower did not work, no remote for TV so could not use. Their reply was - someone stole it Night 2: No hot water or heating - sorry its all gone Night 3: Hot water no heating Our man didn't even stay the 4th night He was not happy.
