Ratby Meadows is a tranquil oasis nestled in the heart of the Northumberland countryside. This picturesque nature reserve boasts an array of vibrant wildflowers, including rare species such as the yellow rattle and the devil's-bit scabious. The meadows are home to a diverse range of wildlife, including butterflies, bees, and birds, which thrive in the unspoiled environment. Visitors can wander along the gentle paths, taking in the sights and sounds of nature, and enjoy a picnic on the scenic benches. The meadows are particularly stunning during the summer months when the wildflowers are in bloom, creating a kaleidoscope of colors against the backdrop of the rolling hills.
Visited Ratby Meadows today (Sunday). Its a lovely walk and the cycle path is great for Mum's, Dad's and the kids. Improvement could be made with the service in the Coffee Shop (Jennos). The queue was long and the service was slow. Hence we did not get to try the coffee which we have heard is great.
The story of Ratby Meadows goes back to the 14th Century and John of Gaunt, son of Edward III. I understand the parcel of land was given to the residents of Ratby, (hence the name), by John following a visit to Leicester. Despite the fact they are actually located in Enderby. The meadows are tucked away behind Leicestershire Police HQ, and various other properties. Access is via Ratby Meadows Lane. There are no facilities here, but a short walk away is the local garden centre, food and drink available. The River Soar runs alongside the meadows before it joins with the Grand Union Canal.
We thought this would be a nice place for our dog to run but it's quite misleading. Dogs must be on a lead and as I saw it, it's a footpath to Fosse Park
I found this place to be strange and a bit of a hazard, mostly because parts are just covered in broken bricks and stone, making it difficult to walk over and don't feel it a place where you can sit and enjoy the silence.
