Rectory Wood is a 12-acre woodland area in the village of Saltaire, West Yorkshire, England. The wood is situated near the River Aire and features a variety of tree species, including oak, beech, and silver birch. A network of walking trails, including the Saltaire Heritage Trail, crisscross the wood, offering visitors opportunities to explore and enjoy the natural surroundings. The wood is also home to a variety of wildlife, including birds, bats, and insects, and features several scenic viewpoints and picnic areas.
Accessible by walking either from the town square area, past the church and across a road or take the windy road by the cemetary to a small car park. Pretty wooded and meadow parkland. Has a little stream (probably bigger in Winter looking at the stream bed), reflecting pool, folly etc. Fairly steep slopes and muddy underfoot in some areas. It is accessed through gates. Popular with dog walkers on the day we visited. Views from top meadow are lovely.
Steep steps about, very boggy in places as of 24/03/2024. Lovely kept woods with clear trails.
We wanted a New Year's Day walk and I selected this at random. We were not disappointed. We parked near the church and started the walk from Church Street. We soon ascended a short, steep and muddy path (lots of rain recently) into the woods. At a fork we turned left and gradually headed further up the hill. There were quite a few other walkers about and seasonal greetings were often exchanged. Eventually, after crossing a small stream, we found ourselves at the edge of the National Trust entry to Carding Mill valley. We backtracked to the stream tumbling down the valley and walked around the hill and returned to our starting point. A very enjoyable short walk lasting about an hour or so.
We walk down through Rectory woods, stunning & peaceful place, great history to them too, as the sign say's "strole in the footsteps of Georgian gentry". The scenery around pool & the ice house in the woods are lovely. The field has benches, ideal for picnics & kids to play. A really good place to visit in town. Highly recommended.
It was a lovely experience and rather fresh and with the glow of the sun also. Defintely gunna go again
Nice woodland walk. Bit of a steep hill from the Church entrance but well worth the effort once at the top. The signs in the woods don't match the colour key on the board at the entrance so could be misleading and end up doing a different route to the one planned.
