This ancient Roman theatre, built in the 1st century AD, is one of the best-preserved Roman theatres in the UK. It features a semi-circular auditorium with seating for up to 2,000 spectators, surrounded by a wall with ornate stone carvings. The theatre's stage and orchestra pit are still intact, giving visitors a glimpse into the lives of ancient Romans who once gathered here to watch performances and events.
Located within the large Gosbeck Archeological parks. I saw this site on the news when they received funding for a new round of archeological studies. We easily found the site of this Theatre and the nearby Temple. Lots of effort has been made to mark out the sites in white lines and provide useful information to visitors. Grass is kept short in the two locations. Once in the site of the theatre, it's features in the landscape became clearly apparent. The park is beautiful, with countryside surrounding it. At the moment they are supporting nesting Skylarks by leaving grass long in places. Be prepared to keep dogs on a lead in much of the park, to protect the nesting sites. Lots more to explore all around this spot, with dozens of footpaths and bridleways crisscrossing it. We parked in the large free public carpark on the parks North West corner. From there you have a map and lots of signs. Well worth a visit.
Beautiful place. Roman theatre about 2000 years they were entertaining the crowds with plays and music. Lots to think about when you're standing here. Unfortunately none of the building remains as the materials were removed to build elsewhere but there are painted outlines to help picture the past
The outline of the largest Roman theatre in Britain is marked out on the grass. The area is very peaceful, with great views of the surrounding countryside. Lots of dog walkers all the time around here
Love the Roman Fields, but just wish there was at least seating on the way round so I could bring my grandad with me on a dog walk. Apart from that, a great open field with friendly visitors.
Would be 5 if some people had more control of their dogs and respect for other dog walkers
Love it here so full of history. Sometimes I close my eyes and imagine the cheering from the crowds in the amphitheater. It must have been so brilliant to witness
Good for kids
