Roost Hole is a picturesque valley in the Peak District National Park, Derbyshire, England. The valley is surrounded by limestone cliffs and features a gentle stream running through it, creating a serene and peaceful atmosphere. The valley floor is covered with a mix of woodland and grassland, providing a habitat for a variety of wildlife. The area is popular with hikers and nature lovers, who come to enjoy the scenic views, explore the surrounding countryside, and spot local wildlife such as deer, birds, and insects.
Was nice to explore somewhere new! There is only one dog poo bin which is located at the car park so you do end up carrying it for a long while. No toilets or drink facilities so probably not best for little ones! Wear decent foot wear as its a lot of track if you don't stick to main path and very muddy!
Lovely bit of forest with lot's of big bridleways and smaller footpaths through the heart of the forest. The bluebells are beautiful in the spring. Streams dotted about which is great for the dog's in hot weather (if they've not dried up) but if you hunt and go off track you can still find pools of water. The terrain can be steep in places and in wet weather very boggy due to the amount of footfall and horses that frequent the forest. Yes there are horses so be mindful if your dog is a little reactive to them. You can also see deer, rabbits, foxes, pheasants and the occasional slow worm. There is a cat park but in certain weather and at certain points in the year it can get very busy. Luckily there are other ways in to the forest with safe places for on road parking.
Such a fun place to enjoy a daily walk, especially if you enjoy a challenge! Muddy paths, a ford & rivers to cross and acres of slippery forest paths to explore.
Beautiful place for a stroll, tree climbing and getting dirty, if you want to stay clean while walking your pooches there is a nice dry main track
Car park gets packed and the pooh bin near the horse gate is the only one I saw in the whole park. Dog walkers shouldn't plan a long walk to the Dragon in Colgate as they don't allow dogs inside and their garden is closed for refurb currently in Jan 2024
Great place for walking with or without dog
Wheelchair-accessible car park
Hiking
Good for kids
Kid-friendly hikes
Dogs allowed
