A 19th-century watchtower standing 12 meters tall, built to warn of potential naval threats, featuring a sturdy stone structure with a circular base, tapering to a narrow point, and topped with a lantern room and a distinctive weathervane in the shape of a fish.
Woke up very early and planned to go to the gym for an hour before work. It was a beautiful morning, so instead, I went to work early and parked the car up. A short walk to Larkholme promenade revealed what a truly beautiful morning it was. With views to the South Lakes, Barrow, and Blackpool, across Fleetwood to the Bowland forests, it was a fantastic place to start a leisurely stroll north along a very clean and well maintained sea wall up to the Rossall Point Watch Tower, which was bathed in crisp, clear, early morning sunshine. There's the sea wall path, a bridleway, and various tracks and paths to choose from. I had a super clear view of the wind turbines out in Morecambe Bay. It was so quiet, the air was fresh and still, and it was so much better than going to the gym. There's plentiful free parking and many places to pick from when deciding how far to walk. Early morning golfers were out, as were lots of species of local wildlife. My pictures don't do it justice, but for a peaceful seaside stroll with great views, fresh air, and plenty to enjoy, I can't recommend this area highly enough. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. Weather permitting, I'm going to make it part of my regular commute by getting to work early and enjoying what nature has to offer.
This place is absolutely amazing to go up and see on the very top of the structure. There are a few stairs to climb, but chairs at the top of them to rest at each station. On the 1st floor there is a inside viewing platform which is phenomenal place for all ornithologists, with the display of birds species found in the local area a real treat. On the 2nd floor the actual coast guard manning it in daylight hours 365 days a year megga interesting. Then on the top floor a phenomenal fantastic Panaramic view of the whole bay and Fleetwood, with maps surrounding the walls of the structure outlining what you can see, there are free to use pairs of binoculars to use if you haven't brought your own or camera enthusiasts. You can see Barrow Docks Heysham Town and Docks, Helvellyn and even Ingleborough and the mountains of the Lake District, Lune Deeps Morcambe Knott End Heysham, and Heysham Power Station, and all the passing ships, I was megga lucky to see Heysham Ferry heading to port. I have lived in Blackpool all my life and never been up it, I can really say a MUST for anybody local to the fylde coast or visitors, after Blackpool Tower. And what's more it's free to go up, a must for families to go to for something different, in the cost of living crisis, as well as interesting something different to do, to keep the kids entertained in the school holidays, as well as having a nice walk and fresh air and exercise rather than stuck on tablets, phones and PC s and game consoles. Where else can you do nice friendly family fun these days all for free provided by helpful knowledgable and friendly volunteers. My girlfriend was talking to a really nice bloke who said it is open mainly at weekends and when they do the Fleetwood Beach Clean, and organised school parties.
Fabulous building which is open to the public with no admission charge when Wyre Rangers are in attendance, normally at weekends. The 2nd floor houses the Ops Room for the local branch of National Coastwatch, a volunteer organisation which keeps eyes on the sands and sea and reports any potential issues to the Coastguard.
The sandy and gravel beach is a decent place to spend some time. While it's not a paradise on earth, the soft sand and gravel provide some level of comfort. The cleanliness of the beach was acceptable, and the water was suitable for swimming. It's a place for a peaceful day by the water.
Walking on the promenade at Rossall point is lovely. However, the watch tower was closed. A real pity because I like going in for a bird's eye view of the surroundings.
Very friendly volunteers who show you around and give you good information. The staff are very welcoming and knowledgeable. It is free and binoculars available on site to see the amazing views.
Wheelchair-accessible entrance
Good for kids
