This ancient hill fort dates back to the Iron Age, around 500 BCE. It features a series of circular and oval-shaped earthworks, including a central enclosure surrounded by a single rampart and ditch. The fort's defenses are impressive, with steep slopes and multiple lines of protection. Archaeological excavations have uncovered evidence of Iron Age and Roman-era occupation, including pottery, coins, and metalwork. Visitors can explore the site's rugged terrain and enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding countryside.
Simply one of those perfect walks, with dogs is best. Enjoy beautiful shaded walks through towering beeches to emerge on top of the chalk downs with expansive views across the vale/valleys, sit here for a moment and feel small but lucky.... an easy wander around the old fort groundworks will bring you looping back to the car park. Perfect for an evening walk on a summer's day.
Part of my old stomping ground. Went back after 40+ years this July 24. Nothing much has changed except access to the viewing location.
A fantastic spot for history. Both iron age and civil war. Great for photography and picnics too. You have to trust in Google maps to get you there and go down a rough track for a mile. I made it ok in my van. Apparently the cavaliers won by pushing the round heads over the steep incline.
Love it here. Fantastic day to spend in the sun... great in rain or snow for that matter. Need to be fit and agile to reach it but oh what views! Great place for dog walking but be prepared to carry your poop bags home again.
Driven past this place multiple time but decided to go visit it. Lovely walk if the weather is on your side. Take wellies or hiking boots if it's been raining.
Splendid early evening walk before getting fish and chip takeaway in Devizes.
Wheelchair-accessible entrance
Good for kids
