Fort Nelson is home to the Royal Armouries national collection of artillery and is a great day out for all the family. Step back in time and explore a fully restored Victorian fort with its high ramparts, original fortifications, huge parade ground and underground tunnels. Plus, there's the national museum housing over 700 pieces of artillery from across the world and spanning 600 years of history. With an exciting collection of big guns, stunning panoramic views, great children's activities, a museum shop packed with gifts and souvenirs and a cafe serving delicious refreshments - there's something for everyone to enjoy. Venue Hire is also offered for weddings, parties, corporate hire and other events. Admission free. Parking PS3.
This is a great "free to enter"museum and is well worth a visit. A very enjoyable and informative time was had. As it was free to enter, we purchased a reasonably priced brochure and enjoyed a coffee and light bite. Car parking was PS3 only for the day. Lots of interesting exhibits. Although not used by us, there was a children's play area that seemed to amuse the kids. Lots of walking and space for kids to get well tired out.
What a fascinating place to get lost for hours in informative displays, recreations of barracks life and underground tunnels. With a well stocked cafe selling delicious food and gift shop for mementos to mark your visit, you can make a day of it, and the most amazing thing is it is completely free to visit! If military history is your thing, don't miss this fantastic opportunity to journey through this part of Portsmouth's heritage. I couldn't help be both fascinated by what I was learning and saddened by man's ingenuity in creating new and more brutal ways to maim each other but it's a credit to the team that have put it together for visitors of all ages.
Not what it seems.....this place far exceeded my expectations! With modern visitor facilities and superb exhibitions and free entry, this place is incredible. There is a very large collection of armaments in excellent condition to discover from a wide time range, all accompanied with informative plaques. There's plenty for both adults and children alike, ranging from interactive displays to a mini assault course. A great half day out.
Fantastic family day out. The museum was excellent and plenty for the kids to learn and see. The entire fort was fascinating and such a unique experience - we loved walking the tunnels in particular. The staff were brilliant and FREE entry! We were happy to donate and support in other ways, totally worth a visit and would highly recommend.
Fab afternoon at Fort Nelson.... They had an obstacle course on for the kids to take part in. It was PS3.50 each and they loved it. We also went down into the tunnels which we haven't done before. Plenty of parking (PS3) charge. Cafe looked nice - we just grabbed a drink and ice cream from the outside kiosk. Staff were all very friendly and helpful.
