Picturesque site featuring the remains of a Cistercian abbey founded in the 10th century.
Great peace of history and in a lovely location park next door for the kids which is kept to a great standard dog free so even the young ones can crawl around on grass.
Visited the Sawley Abby. Lovely old ruins, with history boards to read all about it. Free to enter, and no time limits. A few benches to sit down and enjoy the view.
Beautiful ruins. Couldn't walk the full way as part was blocked off as they are trying to conserve it which is fair enough. Nice little walk. Quiet enough place. Easy to find as well.
Visited as part of my quest to visit all English heritage sites. Typical English heritage ruins with large open area and some walls and stones. However signage is in poor state and some areas are restricted to restore the ruins as of now.
The remains of a Cistercian abbey founded in 1148, set against a backdrop of dramatic hills. After its dissolution in 1536, the monks were briefly returned to the abbey during the Pilgrimage of Grace. They remained in possession until the insurrection's collapse and the execution of their abbot
Beautiful huge old abbey, owned by English Heritage which is lovely to walk around and the village which has a village hall and play park were lovely. Good for an hour or so and would definitely go back.
