Abbey founded in 705AD and famed for its Elizabethan tombs and its unique, ornate vaulted ceiling.
Superb historic abbey. Partly wheelchair accessible but there are some steps inside. There are a couple of smaller chapels off the main church which offer a peaceful place for contemplation and prayer. Free access and there are free guided tours. See website for information.
An absolute beauty. Fantastic ceiling and way too much to list here. if you ever get the chance to visit, its worth an hour looking around. in fact, its worthy of a day trip.
Over 1300 years of history in a wonderful Abbey church. So much to see, highlights include medieval stained glass windows, the remains of saxon King's and a beautiful new(ish) stained glass window revealed by HM The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh in 1998. Whilst we were there we also heard a lovely virtuoso performance on the organ.
We went to the Holocaust Memorial Day of the Gypsies , it was a very poignant service. The Abbey was very beautiful and the staff very friendly and made allowance for me being in a wheelchair.
Magnificent Abbey, so much more so than would be expected in a country town. The Abbey would grace a major city. Do visit and marvel. We were pleasantly surprised, and impressed.
The most beautiful and impressive abbey I have had the pleasure of exploring.
