A bit disappointed that you can't take photos indoors. But, after all, it is still a private residence, which is why it is so beautifully maintained. Visiting is by a guided tour, booked when you pay for entrance. Our guide was very knowledgeable and pleasant. A very good place to visit. Big negative? As far as I could make out, the ubiquitous souvenir shop is actually the ticket booth. You can just about see, through the window that they sell some of the castle's own wine, which is very good (we had some with a meal in a local restaurant that day). But you can't get in to browse, as far as I could see. But, overall, a great place to visit. There are also, some of the archaeological finds from the neighbouring old castle, which is also a great place to visit, and free for English Heritage members. Today's ticket price for adults (25/05/2024) was PS18.
Had a great 3 hours here, (would have been longer but did not get there till 14:00, and it closes at 17:00). Did the 1 hour tour of the castle which was very interesting. The grounds are huge and I wish I had more time to explore.
It was my first time visiting this place. Very pleasant experience, castle inside is impressive, lots of history ,our guide ( I believe his name is Ben) young chap very nice and with huge knowledge. Unfortunately we have limited time so we haven't seen all of the grounds but we will come back in definite. Tour of the castle was 1 hour long and we had only 2 hours to spend, which is definitely not enough.
We booked a tour which lasts an hour and a great way to enjoy the house. Our guide was Bill who was very knowledgeable, humorous and we all agreed we learnt some interesting facts. The furniture and fabrics are beautiful and the views of the grounds are stunning. We were able to stroll around the gardens at will and the planting is lovely. The neighbouring garden centre has a restaurant which offers meals or simply enjoy coffee and cake with a 5% discount voucher issued at the castle entrance. I would definitely recommend a visit. We went on a Wednesday in early July and it was not overly busy.
Visited the castle today and thoroughly enjoyed ourselfs. We booked the castle tour which took about an hour which was totally worth it. ( big thankyou to Jill who took us round giving us the knowledge she processes and also made us laugh aswell). Your taken around in small groups which seemed to work well. After we walked around the gardens and then walked over to the otherside of the lake to view the old castle ruins, not realizing that you can't get into the ruins unless you leave the new castle and go down the road to another entrance of which you have too pay again ( I believe ).
Interesting historic castle. The Elizabethan House is amazing, and the tour guide brought it all to life with new insights into life in those times. Thankyou. The grounds are landscaped and have lovely features and views of the House and old Castle.
