Museum housed in a 19th-century art school featuring exhibits devoted to the region's silk history.
The museum itself is wonderful, but the real highlight is the Paradise Mill tour. Seeing a preserved production floor for bespoke silk designs was absolutely amazing, and will appeal to anyone with any interest in the history of design, industry or engineering. The tour guide was informative, friendly and passionate, and all the museum staff were lovely. Surprise highlight of our trip, cannot praise highly enough.
Wow ..beautful little museum. Very knowledgeable tour guide. Little coffee shop . ..(must thank the lady who served me when my sugar was low for being so caring ,"thank u!!!") Recommend. 5
I attended a day course with local artist Nikki Parameter who has work in a current exhibition housed in the museum. Had a fabulous day and a quick look around the museum. Would highly recommend a visit to the museum, staff are very welcoming and knowledgable.
Nice little museum. We came across it while in Macclesfield for a few hours. It's technically free to enter, though with a donation. The museum itself was quite informative, particularly about silk (obviously!) We didn't spend too long wandering around as we didn't have long in Macclesfield, but it was nice to see. I particularly liked the Egyptian section. There's quite a few child friendly things like colouring, crayon rubbings, and tables set out with materials to make paper plate spider webs. Plus there's toilets and a shop! There's also a giant panda upstairs! Definitely worth a visit if you're in the area.
The Silk Museum is a captivating tribute to the artistry and ingenuity of silk production. With its impressive array of textile machinery and rich historical exhibits, it offers a fascinating journey through the evolution of textile manufacturing. The museum's meticulously preserved artifacts and immersive displays vividly depict the intricate processes involved in silk production, highlighting the craftsmanship and innovation that have shaped this ancient industry. Visitors are treated to a captivating exploration of silk's cultural significance and economic impact, showcasing its enduring allure across centuries and continents. A visit to the Silk Museum is an enriching experience that celebrates the timeless beauty and enduring legacy of silk weaving.
What an excellent museum, great social history as well as explaining the almost unbelievable complexity involved in creating hand woven silk. Dan was a great guide and James in the shop enthusiastically helpful. Highly recommended.
