This 46-meter-tall (151 ft) monument honors Sir John Barrow, a British naval administrator and Second Secretary to the Admiralty, and offers stunning views of the surrounding countryside from its observation deck.
Took my dog here and she loved it, rolled a lot. We caught the bus to the Hoad Lane bus stop then walked up a lane to Ford park, went up some steps to a kissing gate then went through there and walked up the front of Hoad, we managed to get up to the top in 15-20 minutes (Including water breaks as it was a very hot day, approx 22deg) which I was very proud of.
Great restoration project ran by volunteers, of the old monument allowing visitors to access the viewing deck some 100+ steps up! Not for the faint hearted but worth the trek and "free" to access, but donations always welcome.
Parked in the carpark at Ford Park for PS1 then headed up the stony path to the monument. Great short walk, but quite busy at the summit. We headed down a slightly different way making it a circular 1.5 mile walk. Great views at the top!
Take sheepdog to look after sheep, seems like they don't like each other. It's very windy on the top, be careful if you have wig.
Glad we did this. Very pleasant spot and fascinating tower with great views. The kids enjoyed it too, along with the playground next to the car park. I particularly liked the optional payment by donation to go up the tower and sensible parking fee collected by donation box. A friendly, welcoming and all round lovely experience .
Amazing view over ulverston and beyond and nice hike up there.
